The United States has decided to suspend a military aid package to Kiev amid renewed tensions over Ukraine, according to a report by the local network NBC News.
The development comes amid a tumultuous week of trans-Atlantic diplomacy on the issue.
The White House had prepared an additional $ 200 million military aid package for Russia’s rival neighbor, which has already been suspended, the US network reported today, citing the usual anonymous “internal sources” in the matter.
NBC further added that the US will choose other options to help Ukraine, such as a larger aid package that could be approved “In the event of a possible incursion by Russia.”
The network added that its sources signaled that the White House had delayed the shipment of weapons and military equipment to Ukraine as part of efforts to defuse current tensions and maintain influence in the event of a concrete Russian attack on Ukraine.
Moscow has repeatedly denied reports that it wants to attack, saying its maneuvers are of a defensive nature, but adds that it could launch military action if Kiev makes “provocations.”
US President Joe Biden spoke on the phone yesterday with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky where he reiterated Washington’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Moscow accuses Kiev of endangering maritime security in the Sea of Azov near Crimea.
Ukraine denies the allegations and accuses Russia of “Misinformation.”
