Sultan al-Samei, a member of the Huthi rebel political council in Yemen, said he was “not afraid” of the US decision to send warships and planes to the region.
The deployment of US forces in the region comes after a series of rocket attacks by rebels on rich Persian Gulf countries. The United States has said it will send warships and fighter jets off the coast of Yemen “to protect the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.”
The development comes after a phone call between US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Abu Dhabi Prince Mohammed bin Zayed, the US Embassy in the UAE announced.
The United Arab Emirates is part of a Saudi-backed Saudi-led coalition fighting Huthi rebels in Yemen. As part of the deal the USS Cole missile warship will join the Emirates Navy in the port of Abu Dhabi, along with accompanying aircraft.
The USS Cole, which is currently in the port of Bahrain, was previously hit by an al-Qaeda bomb in the Yemeni port of Aden in October 2000 that killed 17 sailors.
