The deployment of Russian troops along Ukraine’s border means President Vladimir Putin could launch an attack on the neighboring country in the near future, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken warned on Wednesday.
He arrived in Kiev today to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky. The US Secretary of State is expected to meet with his counterparts from Britain, France and Germany on Thursday in Berlin.
His visit to Ukraine comes two days before meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Geneva in a bid to ease tensions over Ukraine.
In Kiev, the American diplomat stated that he hoped that Russia would adhere to the path of diplomacy and peace.
“We know there are plans to increase forces along the border, but this means that Putin is considering attacking the country in the near future, taking aggressive action against Ukraine.“Blinken told diplomats at the US embassy in Kiev.”
Russia has denied any rumors that it could attack Ukraine. But US officials say Moscow could attack Ukraine at any time.
White House spokeswoman Jen Saki told reporters that the gathering of tens of thousands of Russian fighters near the border with Ukraine had created an “extremely dangerous situation.”
She stated that “all options are on the table” to avoid conflict, adding that “Blinken will make it clear that there is a diplomatic way forward.”
