The United States is ready to intervene to resolve the stalemate with Sofia, which has blocked northern Macedonia and is holding Albania hostage in efforts to get the green light for membership negotiations.
Washington offered to play “a constructive role in facilitating a compromise” between Bulgaria and northern Macedonia, which would pave the way for the official launch of talks on Skopje and, consequently, Albania. A State Department spokesman told VOA that “given the importance of this process for the countries of the region and for Europe at large, we hope that diplomatic efforts will continue and will continue to offer our support where it is useful.
The spokesman also stressed that “We salute France for its efforts to bring about a successful solution with a view to launching formal negotiations as soon as possible. “. France holds the rotating EU presidency until the end of June, trying to use the remaining time to speed up the stalled process, through a compromise proposal between Sofia and Skopje. The French proposal envisages, among other things, the inclusion in the constitution of the rights of Bulgarian citizens in Northern Macedonia, or its non-recognition of the Macedonian language.
But Macedonian Prime Minister Dimitar Kocacevski made it clear that in its current form, the proposal is unacceptable to him and called for a revision of the draft. This has not happened so far. Macedonian officials are waiting to see what will be done by Thursday, which is also the last day of the French presidency of the European bloc. After that, the Czech Republic takes over the leadership of the Council, which has indicated that the enlargement process is not on its list of priorities.
