The Albanian government in cooperation with the US government is stepping up efforts to increase electricity generation capacity in our country.
In view of this goal, a conference was held in Tirana with representatives of major energy companies from the US and the EU.
“I am very pleased to witness the progress in transforming the Vlora plant into a power plant. I add here the solar, wind energy. Skavica’s long-held dream of increasing energy production by 20% and giving us an impetus towards energy independence. “These show a potential to turn Albania into a net producer of energy within this year, and that is a great thing.”
US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried attended the conference, where she said that getting out of Russia’s gas dependence is of special importance.
“US policies are focused on increasing energy, nuclear and renewable resources. We want to provide energy sources. Putin’s war on Ukraine underscores Europe’s need for independence from Russian gas. We have plans, like the March 5 initiative, to increase the EU’s independence from Russian gas. This will take years for the EU to free itself from this dependence. We are working to advance this effort. “Today more than ever, energy diversification is vital to helping cut off Russian gas.”
US Ambassador to Albania Yuri Kim said energy security is closely linked to national security.
“The United States has emphasized the need to diversify its energy resources. We can not wait any longer, after the cessation of Russian aggression in Ukraine. We need to have more gas conductors. The US and the EU are facing a new reality. The region should seek to find creative solutions together. It is one of the reasons why TAP was built, which today is bringing gas to Europe, free from the negative influence of Russia. “Now is the time to act and we are pleased to be part of this discussion.”
