US President Joe Biden visited the state of Kentucky on Wednesday to personally witness the devastation caused by tornadoes that killed at least 74 people and left thousands homeless.
Mr. Biden was briefed on the recovery efforts following the storms that hit Kentucky and neighboring states late Friday and early Saturday. He saw the damage done to the towns of Mayfield and Dawson Springs by flying over their space and then walked the rubble-filled streets, meeting with survivors.
The president has promised quick federal funding to help communities rebuild, but with such massive destruction, the effort will be the same as building new cities.
In Mayfield, Mr. Biden was briefed by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear about the recovery effort.
“Tornadoes are not red or blue,” he said, referring to the colors associated with Democrats and Republicans.
“I have never seen such great damage from a tornado,” he told local officials. “Do not hesitate to ask for whatever you need.”
Gov. Beshear said Tuesday that more than 100 people are missing in the state, most of them in Dawson Springs, a city of less than 3,000.
On board the Air Force One flight to Kentucky, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters:
“The president’s message today is that he and the federal government intend to do whatever it takes for as long as possible by providing all the support needed to help the recovery effort and to support the people of Kentucky and other affected states. . ”
Mr. Biden’s trip to Kentucky was the fifth he has done in 11 months as president to see the devastation caused by extreme weather events which are at least partly attributed to climate change./VOA
