A 31-year-old father of two has been removed from heart transplant lists at a New York hospital after failing to get the COVID-19 vaccine, his family said today.
His father, David Ferguson, says his son – who is hospitalized and desperately in need of a transplant – does not believe in the COVID-19 vaccine.
“It’s among his basic principles, he does not believe in it. “It is a policy they are pursuing under duress and because he does not accept the injection they removed him from the list of heart transplants,” said David.
“My son is close to death but he does not change his mind.”
Ferguson is the father of two and is expecting a third with partner Heather, he has already opened a donation site to secure the expenses.
Brigham Hospital, which operates as a study and practice branch at Harvard, says transplant patients are more likely to die from COVID than others.
Ferguson’s family said they were considering moving him to another hospital that does not have such vaccination policies. They added that so far the treatment received for Ferguson had been excellent but they could not ignore his beliefs.
“My son is fighting bravely and has his principles and integrity, which give him even more respect. “It’s his body, his choice,” said Father David.
Ferguson and his partner Heather, said they are self-employed but have not been able to work since he was hospitalized.
It was not clear what Ferguson was doing, but the media said he was “looking for physical fatigue.”
Ferguson is not the first patient to be denied a transplant in the US by vaccination status.
Colorado woman Leilani Lutali was removed from the list for a kidney transplant in October after both she and the donor were not vaccinated.
