The death toll from the coronavirus in the US has approached 500,000, while the vaccination campaign has gained momentum and the number of new cases is declining.
According to Johns Hopkins University figures, the US has confirmed 498,880 victims as of Sunday night.
The grim figure comes as this country is emerging from the third wave of the virus.
New cases, hospitalizations and casualties have dropped significantly in recent weeks, following a massive increase over the winter.
However, health officials warn that the pandemic is not over and that new variants of the virus are of particular concern – some of which appear to be spreading faster.
The global death toll is close to 2.5 million, although the real figure is believed to be much higher.
In Germany, partial isolation since November has helped reduce cases in recent weeks, authorities there have said.
As elsewhere in the EU, the vaccination campaign in Germany is going slowly, due to supply disruptions.
In the UK, the Government plans to vaccinate every adult by the end of July.
More than 17 million people in Britain have so far received the first dose of a coronavirus vaccine – or almost one in three adults.
Coronavirus has affected over 111 million people worldwide.
The US is the worst hit country, while in Europe the worst hit countries are: the United Kingdom, France and Spain.
