US Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice Beth Van Schaack said bringing to justice the perpetrators of war crimes in Ukraine is a major challenge.
Van Schaack has said that they are playing “a long game”, despite the fact that they are working to capture them.
“Eventually people, the perpetrators will want to travel, they will have family members abroad, they will want to visit European capitals and international prosecutors around the world will be ready with lawsuits in hand.”said Van Schaack in a U.S. State Senate.
At the Relationship Commission hearing held today, she told lawmakers that the world has never seen this kind of international coordination around transparency of accountability.
“There is a great international effort to document crimes being committed multilaterally through partnerships and also individually at the level of civil society and a great effort with prosecutors from different systems, working together.”said Van Schaack.
Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova has claimed that the Russian military has committed more than 9,800 war crimes since May 5.
