US Congressman Ritchie Torres made a direct appeal to US President Joe Biden, urging Kosovo’s rapid membership in NATO.
In a letter to White House Chief of Staff and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Torres reiterated the idea that following the situation created by the Russian occupation of Ukraine, Kosovo’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance is a necessity.
“Given the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine, security in Europe is critical. It is essential for European security that we continue and expand our partnership through NATO. Therefore, as one of the strongest allies of the United States, we call on you to step up your efforts to ensure that Kosovo is admitted to NATO as a member state, “said Ritchie Torres, a member of the US Congress.
Torres cites the sanctions that Kosovo has imposed on Russia following the example of the US and the European Union, and insists that it is not immune to Russian aggression.
“Russian aggression is also worrying for Kosovo and because of the already tense relations it has with its neighbor, Serbia. “Serbia continues to move away from the West and closer to Russian ideals.” he added
Further, the member of the House of Representatives welcomed the steps taken by official Pristina, citing the request of the Minister of Defense, Armend Mehaj, for Kosovo to join the military alliance, but also the decision of the Assembly of Kosovo for the Government to start membership negotiations. Alliance, recalling that as long as Russia continues to behave as an irrational actor and Serbia strengthens relations with Russia, Kosovo is also at risk.
