The US Special Operations Command for Europe will set up its headquarters in Albania to ensure an important link between allies and partners in the Western Balkans while enhancing regional stability.
SOCEUR has a unique position to stimulate relations between the countries of the Western Balkans, to counter malicious influences, to build interoperability and to respond quickly to threats that may arise.
The head of the Albanian government, Edi Rama thanked the American ambassador Yuri Kim, who facilitated the interaction between Albania and America.
“A statement came from Germany from the US Operational Command, which operates for Europe and has decided to set up a headquarters base of operational forces in Albania. The location of the headquarters in Albania will establish a great interaction with the Albanian allies.
Albania remains a strong ally in NATO. The most important part is that we have received fantastic news that we have been working for some time, it is a burst of high credibility, very close cooperation, on this occasion I want to thank publicly, something I do not like to do, but when it must be done it must be done, that ambassadors do their duty, “But US Ambassador Yuri Kim should be thanked for the tremendous relief he has given to this interaction so that we can have a high level of communication in a relatively stable and long time”, said Rama.
Rama also ironized some Albanians who say that our country does not have an army.
“This is also for those who complain about where we have helicopters, where we have rifles, where we have weapons, where we have cobras. “We are not just a member of NATO, but now a country with the US Special Forces base.”, said the Prime Minister.
The news was also welcomed by the Ambassador of the United States of America to our country. Yuri Kim.
“An extraordinary way to start the new year with a significant development in the US-Albania relationship in the field of defense. The first time that the United States of America set up a headquarters of this kind in Albania. “Important for regional security,” wrote Yuri Kim.
In a statement, the US Special Operations Command in Europe states that the establishment of headquarters in Albania will ensure greater interoperability with Albanian allies, significant access to shipping hubs in the Balkans, and greater logistical flexibility.
“Albania remains a strong ally of NATO and the US enjoys a strong relationship with the government and the Ministry of Defense of Albania, which makes the establishment of a vanguard headquarters in this allied country a natural decision. Also, this location greatly reduces travel time and increases the flexibility of special operations and conventional forces in the region. This would not have been possible without the extraordinary support of the Albanian government and the professionalism of the Albanian army.
“The ability to move and train rapidly within the Balkans, in close cooperation with other allied and partner forces, made Albania the best location for this effort.” said Major General David H. Tabor, Commander of the Special Operations Command in Europe.
“Albania remains an important NATO ally and a valuable security partner, both regionally and globally. SOCEUR plays an important role in demonstrating US commitment to our allies and partners in the Balkans, and this effort is being carried out with the full support of the Albanian government and represents an appreciation for the professionalism of the Albanian military. Through ongoing training and close cooperation, the US Special Operations Forces provide an important link between our allies and partners in the region, thus enhancing regional stability. “SOCEUR has a unique position to stimulate our relationship with allies and partners to counter malicious influences, to build interoperability, to respond quickly to threats that may arise and, if necessary, to repel attacks.”, says the statement of the American command.
This base will be the second important allied forces in our country. In January 2022, the construction of the Kuçova air base will begin, while the North Atlantic Alliance will have the first air base in the Western Balkans.
