The United States has called on China to increase pressure on Myanmar, following the execution of four pro-democracy activists by the military junta.
Myanmar is also known as Burma.
The US State Department spokesman, Ned Price, has said that China can have influence in Myanmar, more than any other country.
“We call on countries around the world to do the same. We will also do more”, he said.
However, the spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Zhao Lijian, has said that China does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.
Asked about the executions, Lijian said Myanmar should use its laws and constitution to resolve differences.
Prince has said that it cannot be pretended that nothing happened.
He demanded that all countries stop selling military equipment to Myanmar and refrain “from giving any international credibility to the military regime.”
He said that the US is considering “all possibilities” to block the regime’s revenues.
The two activists, Kyaw Min Yu and Phyo Zeya Thaw, were arrested after last year’s military coup, under charges of committing “terrorist acts”.
They were sentenced to death in a closed-door trial, which human rights activists said was unfair.
Less is known about the other two activists: Phyo Zeya Thaw and Ko Jimmy.
The executions have also been criticized by the international community./ Radio Evropa e Lire
