The meeting between the top diplomats of the United States and Russia on Ukraine on Friday in Geneva did not bring any results, but they agreed to continue talks in an effort to resolve the crisis that has caused fears of a possible military conflict.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday that Moscow would face a “rapid, tough and united response” if it intervenes in Ukraine.
Mr Blinken said after talks between the two top diplomats in Geneva that Washington had agreed to give Russia written comments on Moscow’s proposals.
But Mr Lavrov said after the talks that the way the United States would respond to Moscow’s security demands would show whether the talks were on track.
“We have been clear that if any Russian military force crosses the Ukrainian border, it would constitute a new invasion. “(Such an action) will face a swift, tough response from the United States and our partners and allies,” Blinken told a news conference in Geneva.
Western states fear that Moscow is planning a new attack on Ukraine after the annexation of Crimea in 2014. Russia denies being planning an attack, but says it could take unspecified military action if its security requirements are not met.
Blinken said Washington had tried during Friday’s talks to determine whether Moscow was prepared to follow the diplomatic path to ease tensions over Ukraine.
Both sides agreed that it was important for the diplomatic process to continue, he said.
Mr Lavrov said after meeting with Mr Blinken that he hoped to ease calm over Ukraine and reiterated Russia’s assertion that it posed no threat to its neighbor.
