In a joint statement, the European Union delegation in Albania and the US Embassy in Tirana demand that the extension of the vetting deadline be voted on.
The statement of the two diplomatic headquarters states that Albania in recent years has made significant progress in membership reforms in the European Union.
“Among the most difficult, but essential steps, has been the approval and implementation of justice reform. “We are at an important moment as justice reform is yielding results,” the statement said.
Vetting of judges and prosecutors is an essential element of justice reform. To enable vetting institutions to carry out their mission, it is necessary to amend the constitution to extend their mandate for a limited period. The Venice Commission confirmed that the proposed extension is in line with European standards and is necessary to guarantee equality before the law and legal certainty.
The ambassadors say that the proposed extension of vetting is strongly supported by Albania’s friends who want to see our country in the EU as soon as possible.
“This is not a party issue, we hope that all MPs, regardless of party affiliation, see this as a matter of national interest and vote in accordance with it, as they have always supported Albania’s European path. The vote for the extension of vetting is a vote for the future of Albania in the European Union“, Concludes the statement of the ambassadors
