The Ambassador of the United States of America in Kosovo participated on Saturday (January 15th) in the commemoration ceremony of the Recak Massacre.
In the organization which was attended by the state leaders of Kosovo, Ambassador Jeffrey Hovenier said that “accepting the truth of the past is only the first step towards justice.”
“Let no one forget or deny what happened here or why the United States and our allies stood up in defense of the people of Kosovo,” Hovenier said.
He added that he wanted to be clear about the United States’ commitment to the truth.
Hovenier quoted former US President Bill Clinton as saying at the time: “It was a deliberate and indiscriminate assassination attempt aimed at instilling fear in the people of Kosovo.”
On January 15, 1999, Serb police and military forces in Kosovo killed 45 Albanian civilians in the village of Recak in the municipality of Shtime.
The crimes committed in this village were documented by the then head of the observation mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, William Walker.
The Recak event was followed by NATO bombing of Serb targets in Kosovo as well as in Serbia.
Vullin has denied the Recak Massacre several times in the past, calling this massacre a “fabricated crime” ./ REL /
