The number of deaths in the United States from COVID-19 exceeded 900,000, as claimed by Johns Hopkins University, and this surplus is partly attributed to the highly contagious Omicron variant.
Such a disturbing figure comes more than 13 months after the vaccination campaign began.
“It is an extremely high number. If you had told most Americans two years ago when the pandemic started that it would cause the deaths of 900,000 Americans in subsequent years, I think most people would not have believed it.“, Says Dr. Ashish K. Jha, Dean of the Faculty of Public Health at Brown University.
He added that it is unfortunate that most of the deaths occurred after the vaccines received authorization.
“We failed in how to help people get vaccinated, to fight disinformation, not to politicize this issue”Said Jha.
64% of the population is fully vaccinated, or about 212 million Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Experts predict that the death toll in the United States will reach 1 million by April.
However new daily cases with COVID have almost halved since mid-January, when they reached a record high of more than 800,000.
