A senior US defense official in Washington said on Wednesday that Russian forces stationed along the border with Ukraine were “ready” to launch an attack if they received an order to do so.
US authorities estimate that Russia has over 150,000 troops along Ukraine’s border with Russia and Belarus.
About 80% of those forces are now “in a position we would consider ready to attack,” the official said, adding that they are 5 to 50 kilometers from the border. The US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, added: “We still can not confirm reports that Russian forces have moved to the Donbas, a region of eastern Ukraine controlled by pro-Russian separatists.
The official said the United States has signals, based on intelligence information and visual evidence that “They (Russian forces) have advanced their readiness to a point where they are ready to start operations now, if they receive the order to do so.”
