The appearance of a blue spiral over the New Zealand sky has caused astonishment to star observers, bringing about the re-emergence of theories ranging from aliens to black holes.
Astronomer Alasdair Burns, who runs the Twinkle Dark Sky Tours star-watching business, saw the spectacle from the country’s Stewart Island.

What actually caused the light coil?
Professor Richard Easther, from the University of Auckland, explained the possible cause of the appearance of the extraordinary spiral of light.
“As far as we can tell it was created by the sun capturing the launch from the second phase of a SpaceX rocket that was restarted about an hour after it was placed in orbit on Cape Canaveral“, He said for TV3.
“It’s amazing, I wish I had seen it.”
While Elon Musk’s SpaceX has not yet confirmed that it is behind the phenomenon, the company’s third rocket flight in 36 hours, the Falcon 9 rocket carrying a Globalstar DM15 satellite is thought to be responsible.
Burns, who photographed the spiral, explained how rockets could cause such an unusual celestial spectacle.
“If that discharge goes in a direction other than the one behind it, it could cause the rocket launcher to spin and act like a rocket launcher and that discharge goes in a spiral.”he said.
At least for those who hoped the helix was evidence of extraterrestrial activity, Professor Easther ruled out the involvement of aliens.
