A university in California has agreed to pay about $ 250 million in damages after more than 200 women claim to have been sexually abused by the campus gynecologist.
Heaps has worked at the Student Health Center for nearly 35 years, from 1983 to 2018.
Already hundreds of women, some of whom have cancer, say they have been sexually abused by him.
But for many years the university had not launched investigations against the abusive doctor until 2017.
He is already charged in hundreds of patient abuse lawsuits.
His medical license was suspended in 2019 during the trial of a sexual abuse case.
The university has already said it hopes the financial compensation will bring some relief to the victims.
Heaps faces 21 counts of sexual abuse against seven women, for which he has pleaded not guilty.
“The conduct which Heaps is accused of committing is contemptuous and contrary to the values of our University,” officials said in a statement.
A court ruling has paved the way for lawsuits against more than 300 other patients who have been abused by the university campus gynecologist.
Lawyers say he was once the highest paid doctor in the University of California’s system.
John C Manley, lawyer for one of the abuse victims says Heaps, is a sophisticated sexual predator who abused his victims under the guise of normal medical examinations.
“He was a certified gynecologist and certified oncologist. “Most women went to him because they had breast cancer or because they believed they could have something like that,” Manley told the BBC.
In another similar case in the US, University of Michigan reached a $ 490 million indemnity deal with more than 1,000 people accusing the sports doctor of sexual abuse during his 40-year career with the university.
