Two people have been arrested today when a gang of robbers smashed with heavy tools several showcases of art objects displayed at the European Fine Arts Fair in the Dutch city of Maastricht.
The rampant attack on the ‘Tafaf’ exhibition involved robbers smashing the windows of hanging windows while their associates kept visitors away.
The two suspects were arrested a short distance from the exhibition.
Most of the exhibition in Maastricht includes works of art, but in some showcases there were also precious stones or diamonds.
The art exhibition has often been mentioned in literary criticism for its unusual subject matter, with some critics calling it “satanic.”
One of the members of the attacking gang reportedly had a firearm and some media outlets said the attackers were seen taking objects and putting them in a bag.
Witnesses spoke of a sense of panic during the raid, but in the picture a man is seen sitting on a bench cross-legged and undisturbed during the breaks, as the gang passes in front of him after the attack.
One of the attackers dressed in an elegant suit is seen constantly hitting the window where one of the works of art was stored and according to reports, after breaking it he took something from inside.
While a visitor is seen in the picture raising a vase trying to stop the breaking, but the accomplices of the attack threaten him and he lowers the object and leaves.
Visitor Jos Stassen told local network NOS that it was strange that the gang had entered armed with hinges and firearms in the middle of the day.
Police have not yet issued a statement on the motive for the attack or on possible items that have disappeared from the exhibition.
