The long break in the 9-year schools and gymnasiums of Tirana turns into a circus.
Students crossing schoolyard railings, students consuming tobacco and traders selling uncontrolled food outside the railings.
Fiksi made an observation near some 9-year schools and gymnasiums in Tirana, where it is noticed that vendors, who have a mini-market activity near the surrounding walls of the schools, sell what they can and how they can. They are on standby in the 15-minute long break hour to approach near the surrounding school railings with whatever they can, boxes, bags, someone puts a chair or some old desk. Inside the boxes or bags are fast food sandwiches, pies, pizzas which are offered to students without any security, now adding to the high temperatures.
At the 9-year school “Shyqyri Peza” in the area of Kombinat, Tirana, two street vendors, a man and a woman, who have a shop in front of the school, go to the railings and start their daily activity. With cardboard and bags in hand, vendors give students pies, pizzas, pies by grabbing them by the hands and without any security measures as in the foods they sell or even the way they sell them.
Even in the 9-year school “Kongresi i Manastirit”, in the Yzberisht neighborhood in Tirana. Again, same look! Street vendors “surround” school railings and sell dough products to students. Even in this school, vendors are more sophisticated, as they also use vehicles. There is a bakery near the school and during the long break near the school railings a car is parked and then three employees sell pie products, pizza, croissants, etc. from there. From the images broadcast on Fiks Fare, the employees have no protective measures, are without gloves and are in a hurry to sell as much as they can!
Meanwhile, on the other side of this school, there are other street vendors. Not as sophisticated as the first ones, but pull out the boxes and approach the school railings. But as soon as they see Fiks Fare’s camera, these street vendors rush to remove the boxes and put them in the store. So know that selling these products in the open air is forbidden!
Meanwhile, some agile students, on long break, cross the school railings and go to nearby shops to buy these products.
The same thing happens in high schools but with a difference as they feel older and use the long break to smoke. It is already fashionable for this age group to have a vape (electric cigarette) and as soon as the big holiday bell rings, girls and boys head to the entrance of the school to light cigarettes. Many others use the break schedule to move to the bar in front of the school and to consume without any problems and without being bothered by anyone smoking even the minor.
Even in the gymnasium “Ibrahim Rugova” in the middle of Kamza, the images show that smoking is smoked even within the school territory without any problems.
Fiks Fare addressed a request to the Institute of Public Health if the latter has done any research on users of cigarettes, electronic cigarettes and alcohol in 9-year schools and gymnasiums, and if there is a list of students with this problem. According to this institution, dangerous health behaviors in adolescents are assessed through several standardized studies conducted for this age group. In addition, studies were conducted which include most European countries, including Albania. This institution made available to Fiks the data of a study that was conducted in 2020. It states that:
- The prevalence of current smoking among young people aged 13-15 was 4.4% (6.4% among boys and 2.4% among girls
- The prevalence of e-cigarette use among young people 13-15 years old is 9.3% (14.2% for boys and 4.1% for girls)
- The prevalence of current use of other tobacco products (shish, cigars, etc. is 18.4% in boys and 7.6% in girls
In terms of alcohol among 15-year-olds, the IPH study refers to the years 2017-2018 where Albania was ranked 36th out of 45 participating countries.
