The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it had been informed by Kiev that Russia had sent nuclear specialists to help monitor the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, located in southeastern Ukraine.
The nuclear power plant, which is under Russian control but is still operated by Ukrainian staff after fierce fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces, has been a source of concern for the IAEA, the United Nations agency.
ANEB chief Rafael Mariano Grossi said on April 29 that the Ukrainian staff at the plant, which Russian forces took control of on March 4, were working “under enormous pressure”. Citing Ukrainian officials, the ANEB said eight representatives of the Russian nuclear agency, Rosenergoatom, had been sent to the Zaporizhia plant.
Russian forces have been accused by Kiev of deliberately attacking six reactors at the plant, setting it on fire and raising fears that actions against the Ukrainian plant – Ukraine’s largest – could lead to a global catastrophe, as it did. with the Chernobyl disaster.
Shortly after Moscow began its occupation of Ukraine on February 24, Russian forces took control of the dismantled Chernobyl nuclear power plant, located north of Kiev. There has been fighting at this plant and there have been reports that Russian forces have trespassed on contaminated soil and may have been exposed to radiation.
Russian forces were evacuated from the Chernobyl plant in late March.
Ukraine has four nuclear power plants, which together have 15 reactors that are in operation.
