Russia’s overnight attack on a nuclear power plant in Ukraine is a dangerous escalation that “represents a terrible threat to Europe and the world,” said US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield.
“With God’s help, the world fortunately averted a nuclear catastrophe last night. Nuclear facilities can not be part of this conflict. We call on Russia to withdraw its troops from there to allow medical treatment for injured personnel, to ensure that operators have full access to the site and to be able to communicate with nuclear regulators and allow them to perform shift changes to ensure plant operation. “Putin must stop this madness and stop it now.”
But Moscow’s ambassador to the United Nations denied allegations that Russian forces had bombed Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia.
“These statements are simply untrue. “All this is part of an unprecedented campaign of lies and misinformation against Russia.”
He said Russian troops had exchanged small arms fire with Ukrainian forces in Zaporizhia but had not bombed the facility in southern Ukraine.
He said the fighting took place in a training complex “located outside the territory of the nuclear power plant” and accused the Ukrainians of setting fire to the training facility.
