Oksana Ilysevych is a Ukrainian citizen who spoke exclusively for the show “Open” on Top Channel tonight.
She answered a range of questions from journalist Eni Vasili, from efforts to escape the war to the panic that has gripped the nation.
Ukrainian army volunteer, what exactly do you do?
I volunteer to help other citizens in cities at risk of finding accommodation or wanting to cross the border.
What is the situation of refugees in Lviv? How far could they have crossed the border?
I have seen the statistics but do not remember them. I know that 80,000 people returned to Ukraine during the war and joined forces to fight or help. People who want to cross the border need 2 hours to do so. We are trying to keep panic under control. Despite the efforts made by the Russian army, we have been resisting for 8 days. We believe in victory.
Is there a presence of Ukrainian forces in Lviv?
We have not seen them. We have not seen soldiers here.
Do you make craft molotov cocktails? How many do you produce and where do you deliver them?
I do not, but there are others who do. Ukrainian police teach citizens how to do it. The homeless also collect plastic bottles to make Molotov cocktails. The whole society is engaged. A colleague of mine was killed while trying to leave Kiev. All Ukrainians have a hatred for Russians now.
How do you think it will go?
I still have little hope for the future. Because you are seeing how slowly the Russian army is moving. I also hope that Belarus will not join this war. We still hope Russia loses motivation and stops.
