The remaining Ukrainian forces in the southern port of Mariupol are still fighting and continue to challenge Russia’s demand that they surrender, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said on Sunday.
““The city has not fallen yet.” Mr Shmyhal told ABC television on Sunday that Ukrainian soldiers continued to control parts of the city.
Shmyhal said he will attend meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington this week and will seek more financial assistance for Ukraine, VOA reports.
Russia continues to wait for Ukrainian fighters in the besieged port city of Mariupol to hand over their weapons.
According to Reuters, although several hours had passed since the deadline set by Russian troops, there were no signs that Ukrainian fighters trapped in the large Azovstal steel plant would agree to the request.
In his speech on Saturday evening, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that “the situation in Mariupol remains extremely serious and inhumane. Russia is deliberately trying to destroy everyone in Mariupol”.
If Russia invades the city, it would mark the first time Russian troops have taken control of one of Ukraine’s largest cities since the February 24 attack began.
Zelensky said he had talked with the British and Swedish prime ministers on Saturday about the situation in Mariupol, the possibility of toughening sanctions against Russia, as well as defending and guaranteeing support for Ukraine.
Russia has also resumed rocket attacks on some cities and artillery attacks on others.
“Although we have heard a lot about their intentions to help Ukraine fight Russian troops“, Said Mr. Zelenskyy in his speech,”none of them has been realized yetAs he said.
An explosion in Kharkiv on Saturday destroyed a community kitchen set up by the World Central Cuisine of the famous chef Jose Andres, which is distributing food to the population in some areas of Ukraine.
Andres told the Associated Press news agency that his organization’s chefs would continue to cook and distribute food in Ukraine. He said giving food in the midst of a meaningless war is an act of courage and resistance.
