Harsh warnings have been issued by Ukrainian authorities amid rising domestic unrest and looting since the president ordered the distribution of weapons to anyone who wanted to contribute to protection against Russian occupation.
Ukrainian security officials have been ordered to shoot robbers in cities without warning, according to a recent announcement by local mayors.
Zhytomyr Mayor Sergey Sukhomlyn said in a Facebook post that the development comes after several robbery attempts in his hometown.
“I am warning everyone: the police, the National Guard, the territorial defense units, have all been ordered not to stop but to shoot without warning,” Sukhomlyn said yesterday.
Behind him and Okhtyrka territorial leader Pavel Kuzmenko issued a similar warning, saying the robberies had spread to the city’s “private sector” and calling for a report of any suspicious incidents.
“Robberies will bring blows without warning,” Kuzmenko said in a Facebook video.
“The Chechens will come to take advantage of us, so we must defend ourselves,” he said, referring to Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov’s announcement that thousands of volunteers were ready to deploy to help Russia.
Following the distribution of weapons to “Ukrainian volunteers” yesterday, a vehicle robbery was reported by armed teenagers in the east of the country.
On social networks footage appeared to show that Russian shops had also been looted by Russian soldiers, but they could not be verified.
Russia launched the offensive on Ukraine on February 23 after President Vladimir Putin described the need for “demilitarization and denationalization” of Ukraine to protect the southeastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions from attacks by the military and local extremists.
