Ukraine said its forces had regained 20 per cent of the territory they had lost in the town of Severodonjeck, which was the focus of a Russian offensive to take over the eastern Donbas region.
Serhiy Hayday, head of the Luhansk regional military administration, said the Ukrainian army continued to hold its positions inside Severodonjeck and was pushing Russian forces to several locations.
“Once we have enough long-range Western weapons, we will remove their artillery from our positions,” Hayday said.
Hayday said on June 4 that Russian forces were blowing up bridges along the Seversky Donjeck River to prevent Ukraine from bringing in military reinforcements and sending aid to civilians in Severodonjeck.
The Ukrainian military says Russia has reinforced its troops and used artillery to carry out “offensive operations” in the city, which has been bombed by Russian forces for weeks.
“The enemy is launching attacks on the town of Severodonjeck with artillery support, he has strengthened his troops with the mobile reserves of the 2nd army corps, the fighting in the town continues,” the army said on June 4.
They added, however, that Russian forces had withdrawn after failed attempts to advance into the nearby town of Bakhmut and cut off entry to Severodonjeck.
In Ukraine’s southern region of Odessa, a rocket hit an agricultural storage unit, injuring two people on the morning of June 4, a regional administration spokesman wrote in the Telegram.
Russia has stepped up its offensive to gain further ground in areas where Moscow-backed separatists already have a base.
The British Ministry of Defense said in its regular updates that Russian air activity remains high over the Donbas region of Ukraine with Russian aircraft carrying out continuous attacks.
