Lisicanku is in the hands of the Russians, this has been confirmed by the Ukrainian side itself.
Moscow already claims to have taken full control of the eastern Luhansk region, even as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed that his country’s forces would retake the lost territory.
“If the commanders of our army withdraw people from some points on the war front, where the enemy has a great advantage in firepower, and this also applies to Lisičasnku, it means only one thing: they will return thanks to our tactics, thanks increasing supplies of modern weapons”, Zelensky said.
Luhansk is one of two regions that make up Donbass, the eastern part of Ukraine embroiled in a conflict since 2014 between local forces and backed separatists.
After failing to take Kiev, the area has now become the epicenter of Vladimir Putin’s military ambitions in the neighboring country.
The fall of Lysychansk puts Moscow closer to achieving its goal of taking control of all of Donbas.
“After heavy fighting for Lysychansk, the Defense Forces of Ukraine were forced to withdraw from their occupied positions and lines, with the aim of saving the lives of our soldiers.” said the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Twitter, while the announcement was accompanied by a photo that read: “Lysychansk: We will return.”
The post also cited Russian superiority in weapons, ammunition and personnel in the battle for the strategic city.
