Ukraine has requested an urgent meeting with Russia and dozens of European countries, to get an explanation regarding the gathering of Russian forces on the border with Ukraine.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Russia had ignored Kiev’s official request to explain why Moscow had positioned over 100,000 advanced troops and weapons around Ukraine.
“Ukraine is convening a meeting with Russia and all member states in the next 48 hours to discuss the movement of Russian troops along our border,” he said on Sunday, February 13th.
Ukraine has made this request through the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, of which Russia is a part.
According to the Vienna Document in 1990 requires the 57 members of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to share information about their military forces and inform each other of major activities.
“If Russia is serious about security in the OSCE area, it must fulfill its commitment to military transparency in order to reduce tensions and increase security for all,” Kuleba said.
There is still no official response from Moscow to Kulebas’s request.
The United States has expressed fears that the gathering of Russian troops could lead to the invasion of Ukraine. Washington has said such a thing could happen “at any moment.”
Russia has amassed over 130,000 troops near Ukraine’s borders. Moscow has denied plans to invade Ukraine.
