Ukraine has formally asked the United Nations Security Council to discuss a resolution passed by the Russian parliament calling for recognition of the regions in eastern Ukraine controlled by Moscow-backed separatists.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said he had submitted a request to the UN for a resolution on the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, known as the Donbas.
According to Kulebas, the Russian resolution undermines efforts to end the war in eastern Ukraine. He added that Kiev has asked the UN to discuss the issue on Thursday.
On February 15, the lower house of the Russian parliament passed a resolution recognizing the two territories in eastern Ukraine and said the document would be sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin for consideration.
This decision, if approved by Putin, could further escalate tensions with the West over Russian military aggression near the border with Ukraine. Russia is believed to have deployed 150,000 troops along the border, raising concerns that Moscow is preparing to attack Ukraine.
Russia has denied having such plans.
Recognition of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics – known as the Donbas – could also end the Minsk peace process in eastern Ukraine, which has been plagued by conflict between government forces and Moscow-backed separatists since April. in 2014 over 13,200 people were killed.
