Russian forces launched attacks in Ukraine on the morning of February 24, on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Putin has said he has authorized “a special military operation” to eliminate what he says is a serious threat from Ukraine.
The purpose of the operation, Putin said, is to demilitarize Russia’s southern neighbor.
He had previously declared two separatist regions in eastern Ukraine independent.
The Russian leader is trying to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO – which he has described as an existential threat.
Ukraine has been aiming to join NATO since Russia annexed its Crimean peninsula in 2014 and fueled separatist insurgency in its eastern provinces.
