Ukraine has said its military forces have withdrawn Russian forces from the Black Sea Snake Island, a claim denied by Moscow, which has called the withdrawal “a sign of goodwill.” , to show that Russia is not blocking efforts to export agricultural products.
“There are no more Russian soldiers on Snake Island. “Our armed forces have done a wonderful job,” said Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
He posted a photo on Twitter showing smoke in some parts of that country, which was occupied by Russia in the early days of the war against Ukraine.
The Russian Defense Ministry has confirmed that its troops have left the island, which it has used to equip its forces with various weapons.
According to the ministry, the military troops have been withdrawn after the soldiers stationed there have performed all their duties.
Control of Snake Island, located about 40 kilometers off the Ukrainian coast, has enabled Russia to threaten sea lanes leading to and from Odessa, Ukraine’s main grain port for transporting grain around the world.
The island has become a symbol of resistance for Ukraine, as the coast guards stationed there have rejected Russian demands to leave, or else be killed, in the early days of the war.
In response, a border guard sent a message to the Russian ship, Moscow: “Russian ship, go to hell.”
The Russian ship then bombed the island.
It is not yet known how many people died as a result of that attack, but the soldier who delivered the message survived.
The Moscow ship later sank in the Black Sea as a result of a Ukrainian attack.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
He called the war a “special military operation” to demilitarize Ukraine.
The West has responded to Russia by hitting the country’s economy with tough sanctions.
