Ukraine’s military said it was preparing for a new offensive by Russian ground forces after days of widespread shelling that killed dozens of civilians in eastern Ukraine as Kremlin forces continue their push to capture Donetsk province and all the industrial center of Donbass.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on July 11 that Russian forces had carried out 34 airstrikes over the past two days and that the death toll in the attack on a five-story apartment building in the small town of Chasiv Yar had risen to 33, including in at least one child.
Ukrainian officials have called attacks on civilian targets in the region “war crimes” and pleaded with the West to increase the distribution of the weapons needed to resist the attack.
The US-based Institute for the Study of War said Russia was regrouping its forces and that the massive artillery strikes were intended to set the stage for future ground advances.
Moscow denies that it has targeted civilian sites, even in the face of documented video evidence and the almost total destruction of many Ukrainian cities and towns.Radio Free Europe
