The UN World Food Program says it is suspending food aid to 1.7 million people in South Sudan as the war in Ukraine draws funding from the world’s youngest country.
The organization is therefore appealing for $ 426 million in aid to avoid famine in South Sudan.
Adeyinka Badejo-Sanogo representative of the organization: “We are already in a crisis, but we need to restore food aid to the areas where we have suspended it to prevent people from going into extreme hunger. More than two-thirds of South Sudan’s population is experiencing a serious humanitarian crisis, we estimate that 8.3 million people, including internally displaced persons and refugees, will experience hunger. ”
South Sudan, which gained independence in 2011 only to enter a protracted and bloody civil war shortly thereafter, continues to see repeated periods of conflict, as well as severe floods and droughts.
The Russian occupation of Ukraine has subsequently increased the pressure in several ways. Mostly, funding is dwindling as countries compete to allocate large budgets to meet Ukraine’s huge humanitarian needs. Donors are no longer actively supporting South Sudan as a crisis.
