Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said this Saturday that Russia could not occupy any Ukrainian city.
In a statement, Reznikov said Ukraine’s armed forces are absolutely ready to fight and will not give up Ukrainian territory, as fears of a Russian invasion grow among the country’s international allies.
In 2014, Reznikov said that Ukrainians “were not psychologically ready to resist someone with whom they sat at the same table yesterday”, but “the situation is completely different” now.
This was the year in which Russia annexed the southern Crimean peninsula of Ukraine and the conflict erupted between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces in eastern Ukraine.
“All those who have seen in the eyes of our soldiers at least once are sure that there will be no recurrence of 2014, the aggressor will not invade Kiev, Odessa, Kharkiv or any other city,” said Reznikov.
The Defense Minister added that Ukraine has its most powerful army in 15 years.
General Valery Zaluzhny, commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, said in a statement that command and staff training was taking place across the country.
Ukraine is “constantly increasing its defense capabilities, unit coherence and military capabilities.”
“After strengthening its defenses for the capital, Kiev, Ukraine is now ‘ready to meet enemies… not with flowers but with spears,'” Zaluzhny said.
Reznikov added that the country was also strengthened by the support of international partners, describing that support as “the greatest since independence”.
He sharply criticized Moscow’s claims that “Ukraine plans to attack Russia”, calling them “absurd”.
“We will not attack anyone, but we are doing everything to strengthen our defense and eliminate the possibility of escalation,” Reznikov said.
According to him, Ukraine plans to “follow a political and diplomatic path” to regain the temporarily occupied territories.
He called on Ukrainians to “remain calm” in the face of growing warnings, calling calm “the key weapon that can provide a strong basis for defense”.
