The summit of EU leaders in Versailles, Paris, enters its second day today, but already from the first meeting it was clearly learned that a quick membership of Ukraine in the European bloc, is rejected by some of the heads of state and government of the countries member.
The Netherlands, one of the countries that once became an obstacle to our country’s membership, now seems to have become Albania’s lawyers. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte recalled how some Western Balkan countries have been trying to join the EU for ten years. “Consider Albania and Northern Macedonia,” he said.
Mark Rutte: The Netherlands was one of the first countries to offer military support, one of the first to request a package of sanctions, so there should be no doubt that we stand side by side with Ukraine. But no quick accession to the EU, such a thing does not exist.
French President Emmanuel Macron stressed that moreover now, procedures can not be opened with a country that is at war, but neither will they close the door and say “never”. In the joint statement, EU leaders pledged to bring Ukraine closer to the political bloc.
“In anticipation of this and without delay, we will further strengthen our ties and deepen our partnership to support Ukraine on its path to the European Union. “Ukraine belongs to our European family.”
Beyond the membership debate, European Council President Charles Michel also unveiled a proposal to provide Ukraine with 500m euros in additional aid, while bloc leaders also promised to help rebuild the country after the war.
