Ukraine hopes to evacuate civilians on Saturday through ten humanitarian corridors in cities on the front lines of fighting with Russian forces, said Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk.
She said they had agreed to open humanitarian corridors in the besieged city of Mariupol, although previous attempts by Ukrainian authorities to evacuate residents from the city had largely failed.
Ukraine and Russia have repeatedly blamed each other for violating the temporary ceasefire for evacuations from Mariupol. In this city it is believed that 300,000 inhabitants have remained stranded.
Earlier on Saturday, the governor of the eastern Ukrainian region, Luhansk, said that an evacuation corridor would be opened later in the day.
In a Telegram post, Serhiy Gaiday said Russian forces had agreed to allow residents to evacuate to several cities in the region after 9 a.m. local time, but he did not specify in which locations citizens would be evacuated.
“The Russians are continuing to grease our cities,” Gaiday wrote.
“However, we are all waiting until 09:00, when the ‘silence regime’ should enter into force, in order to evacuate the citizens of the region, bring food, water and medicine for those who will stay here. ”.
“There was a high level of agreement on the opening of the humanitarian corridor. “I hope that the agreements reached will be respected by the Russians”, he added./REL/
