The Ukrainian army has deployed tanks today in the battle for the Gostomel airfield north of the capital Kiev, where Russian forces have attacked.
“Fighting continues for Gostomel airfield,” said Armed Forces chief Valeri Zaluzhni as footage showed military helicopters flying over the area.
The Gostomel airfield, located near the Antonov civil airport, is the closest point to the capital where Russian forces have arrived.
The Russian air force had taken control of Gostomel airfield but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said “they will be surrounded and suppressed.”
“Enemy paramilitary troops in Gostomel have been trapped, and our troops there have been ordered to destroy them,” Zelensky said in a video message. The Russian side has not commented on the battle.
Local resident Alexander Kovtonenko said he had seen two planes drop shells on Ukrainian ground units.
“The shooting continued for almost three hours, some planes flew over the area and the shooting resumed,” he told AFP.
Earlier, Ukrainian border guards confirmed that Russian ground forces accompanied by tanks had come from the border with Belarus to the Kiev region.
