Ukraine severed relations with North Korea on July 13 after Pyongyang recognized two territories in eastern Ukraine as independent territories.
“We assess that this decision is an attempt by Pyongyang to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine through a statement published on its website.
“North Korea’s recognition of the ‘subjectivity’ of the occupying Russian regimes in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions is null and void, will have no legal consequences and will not change the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine,” the statement said.
Earlier on July 13, Russian media reported that North Korea has recognized the “independence” of parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions that are occupied by Russian-backed separatists.
In the statement of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, the decision of North Korea was also condemned and it was said that in response to this “unfriendly act” Ukraine will sever diplomatic relations with Pyongyang. Political and economic contacts have already been suspended due to international sanctions imposed on North Korea over its nuclear program.
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmitry Kuleba, said that North Korea’s decision speaks more about Moscow’s “toxicity” than Pyongyang’s.
“Russia no longer has allies in the world, except for those states that are financially and politically dependent, and the level of isolation of the Russian Federation will soon reach the level of isolation of North Korea. “Ukraine will continue to respond strongly to attempts to violate sovereignty and territorial integrity,” said Kuleba.
The North Korean Embassy in Moscow has confirmed Pyongyang’s decision, making North Korea only the third country in the world, after Russia and Syria, to recognize the independence of the two Ukrainian entities in the Donbass region./ Radio Free Europe
