French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi took the overnight train to the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, to show their support.
Ukraine has criticized France, Germany and, to a lesser extent, Italy for delaying their support, accusing them of being slow to send weapons and putting their economies ahead of Ukraine’s security.
The three most powerful national leaders of the European Union are working for a united front.
The visit comes a day before the European Commission decides to make a recommendation on Ukraine’s status as a candidate for EU membership.
Before the trip, President Macron said: We are at a point where we need to send clear political signals, we Europeans, to Ukraine and its people, when it is heroically resisting.
This resistance of the Ukrainians has been highly dependent on foreign military support.
The latest US aid package is much needed. It includes artillery, ammunition and marine defense systems with barrels.
