Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba today called for a ceasefire to allow repairs to be carried out to restore electricity supply to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
Kuleba said the backup diesel generators could only power the plant for the next 48 hours and then the cooling systems of the spent nuclear fuel storage facility would stop. Further, Kuleba added that the consequence of this situation will be radiation leakage.
The state-owned nuclear company, Energoatom, said the wind could transfer radioactive reindeer to other regions of Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and Europe.
The former Chernobyl nuclear power plant is the site of the worst nuclear accident in the world in 1986.
