Ukraine asked Turkey to stop the Russian cargo ship Zhibek Zholy, which is carrying a cargo of Ukrainian grain from the port of Berdyansk occupied by Moscow troops.
An official of Ukraine’s foreign ministry said that this ship left the port with 4,500 tons of wheat belonging to Ukraine. In a letter to the Turkish Ministry of Justice, the Ukrainian General Prosecutor’s Office specifically states that Zhibek Zholy was involved in the “illegal export of Ukrainian wheat” from Berdyansk and was not headed for Turkey. The Office of the Chief Prosecutor of Ukraine called on the Turkish authorities to inspect the ship, verify its cargo and detain it.
This is the first cargo ship to leave Berdyansk port unannounced during its months-long blockade. Ukraine has accused Russia of stealing grain from territories occupied by Russian forces since its occupation began in late February, but the Kremlin has always denied stealing Ukrainian grain. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently came out with the statement that his country can mediate the export of grains coming from the Black Sea, in the direction of those countries that need it.
“We have a very detailed plan. Turkey is ready to make available 20 ships for transport from Ukrainian ports, while the Turkish grain stocks themselves are in sufficient condition. Ukraine is one of the world’s main suppliers of wheat, but its shipments have been halted by Russia’s invasion, causing global food shortages. The United Nations has called on both sides, as well as their maritime neighbor, Turkey, to agree on a transit corridor in order to ease the impasse.”
