Surprises from Egypt seem to have no end. Archaeologists recently unearthed two giant sphinx statues during the restoration of the ancient temple of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who ruled about 3,300 years ago when the country was rich in gold and recognized a period of peace, prosperity and growing international power.
Rare limestone statues, discovered by a group of Egyptian-German archaeologists, depict King Amenhotep III in the shape of a sphinx.
They were half submerged inside the temple of Luxor, also known as the “Temple of Millions of Years”. The team also found three black granite busts of Sekhmet, the goddess of war also associated with healing. The remains of the walls and columns were decorated with inscriptions of ceremonial and ritual scenes, the ministry of tourism and antiquity said.
Dr. Horig Sorosian, head of the Egyptian-German mission, said the sphinxes indicated the location of a procession route commonly used for major holidays.
After the statues were cleaned and restored, archaeologists found an inscription on their chests that read, “Beloved of the god Amun-Ra,” a reference to the sun-god often described as a sphinx.
