The United Arab Emirates intercepted and struck two ballistic missiles aimed at the country’s capital, Abu Dhabi, this morning.
Defense officials said they were released by Huthi rebels in Iran-backed Yemen.
The UAE Ministry of Defense did not report any casualties and clarified that the missiles landed in two separate regions near Abu Dhabi. But immediately, a spokesman for the rebels, Yahya Sarea, said they would also target some key areas of Dubai, where he said they would use drones, but did not specify which regions were involved.
The rocket attack follows that of last week when a fuel depot was hit in Abu Dhabi, killing three people. The Saudi-led coalition responded by attacking a detention center, led by Huthi rebels. The airstrike killed at least 82 people and injured dozens more. Such developments are further escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf following the years-long civil war that has plagued Yemen, causing, among other things, a serious humanitarian crisis there. The UAE is part of a Saudi-led coalition that intervened in Yemen in 2015, months after Huthi rebels ousted the government in Sanaa, which enjoyed international recognition.
Saudi Arabia and the United States have long accused Iran of supplying the rebels with military equipment, including drones and missiles, but Tehran denies supporting the group.
