Two heavily armed 22-year-old men were killed last week in a shootout with police that left six officers injured in Saanich, in the Canadian province of British Columbia.
But the strange robbery had suicidal elements as the two brothers waited for the police to arrive for the purposeful confrontation.
Police in Canada said today they have identified the perpetrators of a serious armed robbery last week as two gun-obsessed twin brothers scared of “government tyranny” who decided to carry out the robbery.
Police identified Mathew and Isaac Auchterlonie, 22, as the two killed during the attempted bank robbery in British Columbia.
They had entered the Bank of Montreal branch on Tuesday wearing black clothing, weapons and bulletproof vests.
At the time of the robbery, there were about 20 people in the bakery. “They seemed quite calm, when they spoke they had very calm voices,” said customer Shelli Fryer, who had come for a meeting with the manager.
But when the police came a chaotic war started between the parties, as the two brothers started the attempt to leave. In the dramatic clash, the two brothers were killed while six policemen were injured, including three with serious injuries.
“At first I thought they were fireworks and looked outside. There I saw that bullets were whistling everywhere and the policemen had surrounded the whole area. I saw two cops get hit,” said Christopher Lee Ford, who lives in the area.
But the actions of the brothers are many unanswered questions among those present at the robbery.
“I don’t know what they wanted, what they were waiting for?” says Fryer. “They had all the money, they could have left immediately, they could have left before the police came.”
Although they came to the bank heavily armed and with a package of explosives, police said the brothers had no previous record and were not known to the police for problems.
But Isaac Auchterlonie on social media shows increasing anger with the federal government and an obsession with firearms.
The posts featured moments from famous gunfights such as the 1997 North Hollywood robbery in which two gunmen injured dozens of police during the confrontation.
In other posts there are references to the clash of Irish nationalist militants with the British army, as well as to the siege of Waco when US police raided the compound of the Branch Davidian religious community in Texas in 1993.
Auchterlonie expressed strong opposition to the Covid-19 vaccination and proposed gun restriction legislation in the US and Canada.
The local police admitted that the event is still unclear.
“There are still many questions in the investigation to understand what happened and the reasons,” said police colonel Alex Bérubé.
“The motives for the armed robbery and the exchange of fire with the police that followed have not yet been determined,” he added.
