The President of Turkmenistan has recently said that he wants to close one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country, known as the “Gate of Hell”.
The place is a spectacular natural gas crater that has been burning for decades.
president Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov said it seeks to extinguish the natural fire crater Darvaza, one of the most famous countries of the Central Asian state.
Berdymukhamedov said he had ordered officials to put out the fire, citing “ecological damage and economic unrest” as reasons.
Among other things, he said: “We are losing valuable natural resources for which we can make a profit, using them to increase the well-being of our people”, which means that the authorities will try to put the burning gas in pipacione.
He did not explain the strategy to be used to close it.
The “Gate of Hell” crater is located about 260 kilometers from the Turkmen capital Ashgabat. The fire pit is 60 meters wide and about 20 meters deep.
The local Turkmenportal agency says the burning crater was first formed in 1971 when Soviet geologists discovered a pocket of natural gas in the vast Karakum Desert and accidentally caused it to collapse.
The geologists then started the fire to prevent the poison gas from spreading, mistakenly believing that it could be easily extinguished again.
But decades later she is still burning like the hell of her nickname.
Berdymukhamedov had ordered its extinction in 2010 but the attempts were not successful.
The latest attempt is expected to be more curious from the attention that the world media is giving, and in many cases this has not brought “positive” developments.
