Turkey continues to work on organizing a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told the Turkish news channel NTV on Thursday.
“We know that critical topics need to be discussed by leaders, so we will try to bring leaders together,” he said.
Cavusoglu said that Turkey continues to think positively about the negotiations between the two countries, especially after the recent events in Bucha and Irpin, which “negatively affected the process”.
“Inhuman images from regions like Bucha and Irpin, which we also condemn, changed the atmosphere. They created a negative atmosphere on the Ukrainian side. “While there were various statements from the Russian Federation in this regard, this ultimately negatively affected the negotiation process,” he said.
“Despite all those challenges, President Zelensky said the talks could go on… But it takes two leaders to say yes. “Especially President Putin,” he added.
Earlier this month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told President Putin that he would like to join him with President Zelensky, following a personal meeting held between the Russian and Ukrainian negotiating delegations in Istanbul in March.
