Turkey’s Interior Minister said on Wednesday (February 2nd) that authorities have found 12 bodies, believed to be of migrants who were frozen to death near Turkey’s border with Greece.
Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said on Twitter that 12 people were among the 22 migrants who returned to Turkey by Greek border guards.
He said they were found near the Ipsala border crossing between Turkey and Greece “barefoot and naked”.
The minister did not provide further details, but accused the Greek border units of “cruel” behavior and the European Union of lenient behavior towards Greece.
Turkey often accuses neighboring Greece of illegally returning migrants seeking to enter Europe.
Greece denies the charge.
Turkey is a major crossing point for migrants from the Middle East, Asia and Africa seeking a better life in European Union countries.
Most try to cross into Greece either by crossing the northeastern land border or by packing into smuggling boats heading to the eastern Aegean islands.
