Turkish warplanes hit targets of Kurdish militants, including training camps, shelters and ammunition depots in Iraq and northern Syria, the Turkish Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.
The airstrikes are part of Turkey’s ongoing campaign in Iraq and Syria against militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party and the Syrian Kurdish militia YPG, two groups that Turkey describes as terrorist groups.
Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said on Wednesday that the operation was successful and that “many terrorists” had been killed.
“Only terrorists and targets belonging to terrorists have been hit. Terrorist shelters, bunkers, inns, caves used by terrorists have been destroyed. “Terrorists once again feel the power of the Turkish Armed Forces,” Akar said.
The Iraqi army condemned the airstrikes, arguing that Turkey’s infiltration of Iraqi airspace was a violation of its sovereignty.
Turkey said all planes that took part in the operation, which took place in the Derik, Sinjar and Karacak areas, have returned to their bases. The Turkish side did not provide details on the number of victims from these attacks.
An Iraqi security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said at least 20 airstrikes had hit the Sinjar mountainous area.
This area, where the Iraqi Yazidi minority lives, is under the control of several armed forces and various groups, including Kurdistan Workers’ Party militants.
The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) launched an uprising against the Turkish state in 1984. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which in the past has mainly focused on southeastern Turkey.
The Kurdistan Workers’ Party is also recognized as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union./REL/
