According to official data, 77,722 new cases of coronavirus infection have been confirmed in Turkey in the last 24 hours, which is the largest daily balance of confirmed cases since the beginning of the epidemic.
The number of hospitalizations has increased by 10% in the last month, although the daily balances of the newly infected have quadrupled, Health Minister Fahretin Koca warned after a meeting of the government’s scientific advisory council, Reuters reports.
“In previous periods of the pandemic we have seen days with a larger number of hospitalized, but with a smaller number of newly infected. “It seems that the omicron variant will reduce the risk of a pandemic,” said Koca.
At the end of December, the highest daily number of newly infected was around 20,000 and there were 145 coronavirus-related deaths in the same 24-hour period, according to official data. However, the number of deaths among COVID-19 patients has not increased in recent weeks, despite the increase in the daily number of new cases.
